Sunday Brunch Crew

I am so lucky to be included in this group’s Sunday brunch get -togethers. The number of people that show up always depends on who’s in town, who is able but regardless is always a fun mixed crowd. Today was no exception.

They met at a new location and I was circling on Mean Mia trying to find it. Jason finally dropped me a pin”. Four people were new to me….Sunny, Mossimo, Jai and Jeevi.

The gang minus Jai who left his phone on the table….so we took this selfie without him, using his phone.:)
After lunch we headed over to the new Central Grocery store and all of us did some shopping. I bought a week’s worth of premade meals for about 20$. Will see if it’s worth it.
We caught Jeanette hoarding toilet paper and we made a huge spectacle of her!! We all know where we can go if the shelves over here end up bare like the panic buyers in the USA πŸ™‚
Jason was cracking me up looking into this mirror and watching our faces get distorted. It was like a carnival mirror from our childhood except I’m quite sure the store didn’t even realize it.

Finally opened a Thai bank account!

Opening up a Thai bank account has been a challenge of mine since I came here. Nobody wants to give you an account unless you have a work visa. They don’t seem to understand that with an O-A retirement visa, you are NOT ALLOWED to work, yet are required by immigration to have an account in Thailand with money in it. It’s a catch 22.

I read that sometimes it helps to wear the proper outfit, look the part. So I put on my best dress and new sandals and hit the mall in hopes of finally checking this off my list.

I started at the Kasikorn bank because that is the bank Min uses and also my landlord. Thought that would be most convenient to transfer money etc. But after waiting for 20 minutes I was told “we cannot”.

I had been to the Bangkok Bank twice before in Phuket Town with my old visa and told no”. The line at this bank looked extremely long, so I opted to skip trying again.
This bank wasn’t so busy and looked promising. I was greeted right away, only to have my passport taken away and much discussion regarding. Then….NO”. When I asked if they knew which bank would open it for me, they did not know.
If it doesn’t open, it’s not your door #inspirationalquotes #motivationalquotes #motivationmonday #dailyquotes #lifequotes

I was getting hungry. It was 4:30 and I didn’t have lunch. But I wanted to try one more. I told myself to just expect to be told no. I even typed in my google translate “immigration requires me to have an account, what should i do?” I knew immigration would never be of any help. Well I never needed to use it, because the kind women called a hotline and was told it was okay! YEA!!!! My new bank! I wanted to give them the US dollars I pulled out prior to leaving the USA, but they would not take anything except Thai dollars. So I headed to the currency exchange. All of these banks and the exchange booth are all conveniently located in one area on the top floor of the mall.

It was interesting how closely they inspected the bills before exchanging them. I thought, what the heck? They all were given to me by PNC bank….no way they could be counterfeit. But they handed me back the below bills saying they couldn’t accept them. So interesting, but good to know if you are travelling here. You have to have absolutely perfect bills to exchange. Best to just pull Thai BHT out of an ATM once you get here.

This was refused because of the red line on the bill. Poor Ben.
These two were refused because of the writing on them.
And these two refused due to the small tears in the border. Hilarious right?

Goodbye Tia.

She has served me well. For the $425 dollars that I paid for her, I could not ask for a better more adventurous partner to start my time in Phuket with. It’s been a month short of a year since I purchased her. She owes me nothing.

I decided to help Min out and take over her Mean Mia payments. She no longer can afford them with the hotel business closing and the tourism tanking. It’s a win win. I get a more powerful bike that rides two if needed and she no longer has to scramble selling sunflower seeds etc

My girl. Begin again.
Min and Mimi saying goodbye. Min is going to sell her for me.
Mean Mia. She is fast. A little beat up, but no complaints. She is the bike Tiffani and I first started on a year ago.
She’s a much bigger bike. I feel safer on her and she can make it anywhere. No more worry about whether she will start or have to talk her up mountainsides. I am very happy I decided to take the coastal roads back yesterday with Tia, a great last ride. I regret filling her tank with gas afterwards:)
I totally jinxed myself by asking Min to fill out some rental paperwork I could carry with me in case the police stopped me and wanted to see it. She wrote one up for two years πŸ™‚ She told me the police just want to see my driver’s license and that I am wearing a helmet. I have NEVER been waved over before. Welp, sure enough, happened on my way home.
Conveniently they set up a table right there for easy payments. Cost me 500 BHT.
I had heard that they are sure to find something wrong no matter if you have all your documents or not. So I just thanked them kindly for giving me a ticket and paid it. They said my sticker was outdated. I can’t read numbers so what do I know. Plus their years are not recorded the same as ours. For example I think the year is 2020 but they write it as 2463. But I texted Min when I got back to ask her for an updated sticker πŸ™‚

Phuket- I.m Baaaccck!!!!

The minute I got through immigration, I felt warmly back in my element. The warmth, the smells, the language I heard around me- welcomed me to this gorgeous place I still feel fortunate to be able to temporarily or forever call home”.

Yesterday I met back up with my brunch expat friends and I realized why this environment is so uniquely different. It’s not just the weather. It’s not just the beautiful natural environment that surrounds you but it’s also the people. The expat community. We are all following a different path in life. There is no comparison with others. We are not competing to who has more /better things or even really care what type of neighborhood/country we were born in. There are rarely relationship problems discussed, as most of us are single. We are all wandering souls who are content with discomfort and challenges. There are barely any complaints. It’s a community of seekers enjoying life and don’t seem too concerned about their position in the food chain.

Visa runs are a common topic. Atypical jobs are a given. There’s an ex-Olympic diving trainer, a travelling pilates coach, an Asian military businessman (not sure what that entails, but he travels a lot), a wake board park owner, an organic tea local entrepreneur, some real estate sellers and marketers and me, the token digital English teacher/towel designer.

When discussing which beach to explore after brunch, James agreed that the previously exclusive Banana Rock Beach is now a popular spot for tourism. Boats are now docking there as well as vanloads of visitors being dropped off regularly. We both recall being there alone in past times and now it is a bit overcrowded.

I decided to try to find a new spot, so I continued travelling north along the coastline and while slowly driving, I peered to see if there was a beach I could scale down to that was less utilized. I drove past this staircase and quickly turned around.

That view alone looks promising -no?
Beautifully empty.
The houses up the mountainside were what dreams are made from. If only I had the finances to live with such a view! I later decided I wouldn’t really want that big of a place. Maybe just a room” with one of the full sized window would do. πŸ™‚
I planted myself here and watched the hermit crabs wander and fight. I swam like it was my last time in the sea. I very much missed it. It’s like a huge hug from the Universe- floating in these crystal clear waters.

Since I was enjoying this so much, I decided I was going to take Tia the long way home along the coastline. I wanted to see how empty this island really was. I was told that the second wave of high season never happened. The roads and traffic so far are definitely an indication of that. I wondered what crazy Patong would look like.

Thanks to Min, I have a new rear view mirror on Tia- it was cracked after Zoe and Sedona’s adventures here. Adjusting my view I headed up and down the hills of the coast.

I pulled into Surin beach and opted for a lemon soda in the shade.
(I am detoxing from alcohol which I had too much of in the USA) My new favorite song which explains all this is Meghan Trainor’s “Evil Twin”!
This beach was quite hopping! Mostly white tourists.
Cheeks still rosey and my back, which I cannot reach with sunscreen, got its fair share of sun! I used to wish I had someone here to share all of this with and would see couples on the beach in envy. I’m mentally in a new place now. Perfectly content with what I have, appreciating every minute, letting go of any expectations.

As I drove through Patong, the traffic was literally less than I have ever experienced before. I personally love that fact, for me driving, but realize the gigantic repercussions this must be having on the Thai businesses. I cannot even imagine how many companies will have to close their doors and I am not sure what part their government will play in helping them to survive the impacts of the fear based coronavirus. I wish the media would stop. It is all consuming.

Qatar Airport- Heading back to Phuket

I wanted to share what I saw of Qatar, thinking most of you reading may never make it to this country. After travelling 30 plus years myself, this is my first time flying there. I took a walk around the airport while waiting for my transfer and snapped a few photos of this very progressive airport. I believe they are preparing to host the World Cup there. Would be a cool excuse to visit if I liked soccer at all πŸ™‚

Flying over Qatar, I had a window seat. It was an amazing landscape. Different than Dubai. No green whatsoever. Was a land of tan desert with structures on top. Odd that it is total sand surrounded by water. I would love to explore the desert. I picked up a call once from Saudi sisters and they were driving in the desert. Said they were camping there with their families. They showed me a view and I felt so honored to see such a landscape by beautiful women wanting to show off their country. They were driving. And proud of that too. Cambly (online teaching) keeps me in touch with the hope of the world and not so much the fear. It’s been such a blessing to me.

The words in the background were moving words in English, but they didn’t make much sense to me.
Showing off cars and motorcycles. Like a modern car show. Glancing at this, it was obvious this was a place of great wealth.
Huge screens were everywhere, like Times Square. There was this gigantic teddy bear, which was not the only larger than life sculpture at this airport.
There are a lot of gold stores in Thailand, but none like this! Huge necklaces in pure gold for sale.
I mean seriously! But I imagine this is not uncommon here.
This oversized metal structure was a playground for kids. So artistic, I was tempted to go down the slide.
Another enlarged sculpture that was interactive.
This was another art piece which looked like it was made of wood. This photo helps to show its size. Notice the seating in the background.
I loved transferring here. It surprisingly did not have as many sheiks or hijabs. But I did see a sign for a separate prayer room for women to use.
All high end stores in this airport. Luxury brands. I imagine it would not be cheap to visit this country.

I arrived back to Phuket to a very long immigration line, but oddly filled with only white travellers. So sad how the Chinese are quarantined. I’m used to seeing many more Asian tourists. The reality of the virus is here for sure. Not many cases yet in Phuket or Thailand, but my taxi driver said many businesses are closing. It’s a perfect time to come over here if you are able! Quiet and prices are cheap cheap cheap.

In my immigration I was questioned to show proof of my health insurance. They stamped me in for a year, but I had to go to an office where they jotted down my name on a hand written book and said if I leave the country again, when I return, I will need to show proof- or go to my 90 day check in and show it there. So, officially I bought myself 3 months to get me some insurance πŸ™‚ Need to start looking!

I put my head down for a nap at 11 am and did not wake up until 5:30 that night. I needed water and food so I adventured out, got Tia started after a rough cough, and went to the store. I was surprised how empty the parking, traffic and store was. By 9:30 pm I couldn’t keep my eyes open so back to bed I went and slept until 5am. Jet lag is for real!! Kassie encouraged me to get Tia out and go watch the sunrise- but I got trapped watching internet videos and missed my window of opportunity.

Today I was able to get my goals for 2020 written, update my Monk manual with monthly, weekly and daily goals, analyze my 2020 storyboard, and I already feel better! I saw a chair open by the pool and was able to smack on some sunscreen and make my way down. Was the best decision made. I am so fortunate to be here!

My view. My new tattoo. Begin again. I am off to a good start.
After an hour of sun and swimming, I made my way to the condo coffee shop and set up my office.
I purchased some earpods when in the USA, and can’t believe I didn’t buy them sooner. Totally enjoying some new music by Meghan Trainor as I soak in this life.

Agave and Rye, Covington Ky my last night in the USA

Bittersweet. My last night in the USA. Honestly it has been quite difficult finding my balance with friends, work, obligations, (got my retirement visa, drivers license and stickers renewed, did my taxes, painted zoe’s bedroom, and so on) and readjusting to the weather and food. My nose was constantly running and my gut in turmoil. I never got around to raking the leaves at the condo or fixing the muffler on my car.

Seeing my loved ones and people that have been such a part of my life is hard to squeeze in with such short time. Even extending my stay a bit due to the virus and cancellation of my flight through HongKong, didn’t emotionally help me prepare for my departure any better. Trying to make quality time count and staying present was my goal.

I did my best. I took in many new museums and artistic sites which I used this blog to share. I experienced many new-to-me restaurants. ( thank you justin for being so generous picking up all the tabs!) Even got out to a few concerts and movies. ( highly recommend jojo rabbit!). I had a truly beautiful time.

Now I run back to my safety cocoon of Thailand. A retreat. Time where I make myself the priority. Where I feel healthy and live a very simple life with much less money being spent! I look forward to welcome the friends who hope to visit me and the adventures I’m planning for 2020! (Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and India – financially and God willing;)

Not sure when I’ll be back. But I’m sure I will. And hopefully our paths may cross again. ❀️

Justin took me to Agave and Rye, this Covington spot, for our last dinner together. He rightfully thought I would appreciate the art decor.
A mish mash of artistic styling.
Loved the menu! But honestly the margaritas were too sweet for me.
Not sure what to think of him.
Inside the women’s restroom. Quite cool!
And of course beloved Frida who represents so much to so many.
This restaurant’s taco choices were amazing. We tried four different ones and each had a great flavor and uniqueness found no place I’d ever been before! One contained a spicy Mac and cheese with fried chicken! I would recommend checking this place out! Was glad to end my stay with some Mexican American! They could use a few more choices like that in Phuket.

Date night at Scotti.s Italian Restaurant

I have heard of this historic restaurant for years, but never made it there until now. Date night with Justin. My last weekend in town. I had no idea what to expect from this. But when I walked inside, I was so happy to have had the experience.

It’s building is still authentically small and old world in the midst of the city of Cincinnati. Seems to have survived so much transition and is still kicking it, taking only two seatings per night. Reservations only.
Justin kept jumping in front of my camera. Being his typical goofball self even sober.
A nice history of the founder. Truth be known, food was …..mediocre, but the experience of dining there with Justin, priceless.
Not sure you can really capture the quaint, small feel of the interior, but the decor was something to see. All the waiters were over 60 years of age. There was nothing fancy about this place but yet felt special. You can tell I was happy.
I wonder how long this candle has been here.
Now behaving with a glass of wine.
The walls were completely covered in mosaic ceramic chips. Artwork on the walls was random. We later learned some of the art were gifts given to the owner throughout the years from various people. Tablecloths perfectly expected red and white checkered. Tons of basketed wine /olive oil bottles in all shapes and sizes were strung from the ceiling.

LIVE- LOVE- EAT!

Brunch with Zozo at Common Wealth, Covington KY

As I sit in the Boston airport awaiting my flight to Qatar, making my way back to sunny Thailand, I decided to upload a few posts to share some of my finds from my visit to Cincinnati. My time there was spent with open eyes and stomach- exploring new restaurants, breweries and events. I literally gained 10 + pounds! I could barely fit into my corduroy pants by the time I left.

I again googled top places to eat but this time in Covington and discovered another gem. This place was calling out for comfort food, 50% of which is locally grown. Owned and run by a married couple, it has been open for 3 years now in Covington. I was drawn to the bunny logo.

A great shot of the signage and a view of the historic Covington Main Street.
Inside the decor was country but modern. A great mix. The kitchen was behind the window pane glass and looked immaculately kept.
Our brunch was delicious. Biscuits fresh and sweet.
Zoe holding up the dinner menu, which included rabbit. (Glad we were there for brunch!)
Cute bar and looks like another dining area upstairs.
Ode to Eli. We will always cherish that pet. She meant so much to us.
Zoe snapping a photo of me.
And me her. There was an Amish man making a delivery when we were there. Love that this is not out in the countryside but rather in the heart of the town, but having all the authenticity of true country cooking.
The symbol of Mainstrasse. An old German clock in the square. This area is really impressive with its renovations and new businesses. If you ever visit Cincinnati, be sure to include Covington!

Behringer-Crawford Museum- Devou Park.

After a luncheon with my SKL ex- coworkers, Laura Bingle mentioned a bead collection featuring Bob Mackie’s dresses made for Cher. Zoe and I decided to check it out. We discovered a museum neither of us knew existed as well as a mini train set rendered by the creator of Saturday Knight Ltd.

Upon arrival we saw a big train engine inside the windows. We snapped a shot with our reflections.
This small museum features the history of transportation in the Cincinnati/Kentucky areas.
In the entry is a mini train set which was hand painted over the course of 6 years and donated to the museum after the death of its creator. It is amazingly detailed and features many of Cincinnati/Covington’s landmarks.
I loved the graveyard outside the church., complete with a fresh grave digging.
There was a crawl space where you could go under the set to see better views through these plastic bubbles.
So cute of Zoe!
Showing the location of the bubble views amongst the extravagant set.
You could press a button and the set lighting representing daylight would fade and all the bridges and buildings then lit up for a night view.
Inside every shop to the tiniest detail were food, shoes, and other delicate features making it all feel so alive.
This is the man who made it. And was the original owner and innovator of SKL where I worked 13 years. I had no idea. Small world.
View of the park through a small peephole. Brown grass and bare trees. You can feel the chill. But at least the sky was blue and the sun was out.
Then we came across the bead exhibit.
I’ve always been a fan of the American Indian beading. I think because we used to have a beaded pair of leather moccasins as a child. I still have in a bin in the basement.
This piece was done by an art teacher who was holding classes here to teach beading techniques.
A close up of a mixture of techniques that same teacher worked on in Paris.
Was told these are African chastity belts. The women beaded them and then tied them around their waists. The men then cut them off to claim their wife. I guess the women made them as attractive as possible to show off their skills and personalities.

We found the Cher dresses, complete on Cher mannequins. Apparently the owner of this collection keeps these beautiful gowns on these mannequins in his home. The lady guarding the dresses whispered that she suspected he may be “gay”. Zoe and I chuckled as if that was a secret or even a question. The collector purchased them from an auction. Can’t imagine what he paid. The exhibit had a video of Cher clips showing her wearing each of them.

You have to see these up close. The detail. The weight. I zoned out the talkative helper and just starred for awhile.
Designs were amazingly thought out. Definitely worth the trip to this park. Apparently in the spring/summer months they also hold free concerts. A wonderful discovery!

a girl can wait for the right man to come along but in the meantime that still doesn’t mean she can’t have a wonderful time with all the wrong ones.“—quote from Cher.

Corbin Kentucky- Home of KFC

Why. Good question. It was a halfway meeting point for me to be able to see my Aunt and Uncle who live in South Carolina. It ended up being the perfect meeting spot.

A great sign welcoming you into this small town.
We met at Wrigleys Tap Room which was on Main Street. It had a very interesting selection of food and beer and we camped out there for several hours.
My 80 year young uncle who educated me on the elk head mounted behind him.
With so many choices you can see why we had to do a flight/sampler.
My favorite was the Cider Boys strawberry magic. But I was kind enough to let Pam finish it off.
We were sporting the same color theme.

On my way back to Cincinnati, I was determined to see the king of chicken’s park. I mean, afterall, I’ve driven 3 hours and I needed to see what this town was about. Goes with my new outlook of opening up my eyes to what beauty there is to see. Every place has a gem or two.

I parked and took a quick tour of his memorial.
Colonel Sanders was a real man, not just an icon made up to serve the marketing world.
A well kept park which I imagine is great to enjoy in the summertime.

I love this mural showing the chickens following their way to his oven. Complete with the tablecloth street pattern.
This bridge is so small town America. I had to snap a photo.
Further up the road was the original cafe opened for his infamous fried chicken.
Inside was more history of the man himself and the business he created.
